Some Tweets have a Habit of Jogging Memories

May 2022 was an extraordinary time to be a Chainlink node operator.

It began with Yuga Labs’ Otherside land sale and was closely followed by the collapse of Terra/Luna.

You could say that crypto space went a little MAD.

Market turmoil and extreme volatility. Panic. Obscene gas prices. Sieve-like wallets holding ETH like water. Lost hair follicles and unhealthily high heart rates.

It was quite a month!

These events were real-world stress tests. DeFi came under enormous pressure. And as CLG wrote at the time:

“Even during the worst of blockchain network congestion yesterday ($7k+ tx fees at 8,000 gwei gas prices), Chainlink nodes continue to publish oracle updates on-chain.”: Source.

It’s worth taking a moment and thinking about what that actually means.

Sometimes the most important events in crypto are the ones where nothing happens.

When critical infrastructure works properly, very often there isn’t a story.

Billions of dollars wiped out? News.

Extreme volatility? News.

Record gas prices? News.

Critical infrastructure continuing to work?

The node operators did their jobs. Chainlink services continued operating while much of the space seemed to be in a state of utter chaos.

In fact, perhaps the most interesting part of that old tweet is what came next:

“And nobody bats an eye because this level of reliability is expected.”

“EXPECTED!”

Four years later, that tweet feels quite poignant.

Chainlink has changed enormously.

Their ecosystem has grown. The number of services has expanded significantly. The technology has evolved. And the role Chainlink plays across on-chain finance today is considerably broader.

But there is also an important element of continuity.

Many of the node operators who helped keep Chainlink services operating through one of crypto’s most turbulent periods are still here today.

They’re still providing data and services relied upon by countless DeFi protocols and financial institutions.

They’re still operating infrastructure.

They’re still quietly succeeding without creating news.

DexTrac included.

And there is one final thing that old tweet made me think about.

Never underestimate the value of collective operational experience.

The stakes have arguably become considerably higher since those days.

But the experience hasn’t disappeared. It continues to grow.
